Instrumentation is the technology of using electrical/mechanical instruments to measure and control the physical and chemical properties of materials.

Measuring and process control instrumentation are essential parts of any industry -- from the manufacturing of breakfast cereal to the building of huge jet airliners.  Instrumentation controls the disposal of wastes and by-products of industry, thereby avoiding pollution of our cities and protecting precious natural resources.  Instrumentation is involved in everyday activities such as whether to carry an umbrella to work as well as sending a man to the moon.   Most homes and apartments are equipped with thermostats which control the temperature and maintain comfort regardless of the season.

A process control system consists of four elements: process (a process consists of an assembly of equipment and material that relates to some manufacturing sequence),  measurement (information obtained from the measurement of a variable. A measurement refers to the conversion of the variable into an analog signal, such as pneumatic pressure, electrical voltage or current), evaluation (evaluation examines the variable and determines corrective action to be taken) and control (the final element in a process control loop is the device that exerts a direct influence on the process).

In the process industry, a standard set of symbols is used to prepare drawings of processes.  The purpose of this standard is to provide a satisfactory system of symbols and identification for industrial processes instrumentation equipment.  The Instrumentation Society of America has prepared the standard entitled Instrumentation, Symbols and Identification, ISA-S5.1.  The drawings are called Process and Instrumentation Diagrams. (P&ID)  They show the interconnection of the process equipment and the instrumentation used to control the process.

Our experience with the installation of instruments and controls include the petrol-chemical fields in Saudi Arabia, the waste water treatment plants in New Jersey, chemical containment buildings at Schering Plough and the circulating fire water loop in the Lincoln Tunnel.   Please contact_us@cpelectrical.com or call us at 908-604-9261 for inquiries and consultation.
